In March this year, I was at an entrepreneurs conference in Miami and I met Dr Cory M. Lessner. The other people in the group had mentioned that he was a celebrity Doctor, renowned throughout the US for doing more than 30,000 LASIK eye procedures in his long, 30-year illustrious career.
I was interested in speaking to him because in the past few years my eyesight has deteriorated significantly. Although in my case its not hereditory to have problems with eyesight, I seem to have fallen through the cracks.
I have a set of glasses that I never wear. To be honest, in part it's my vanity that is responsible for this, and the other issue I am faced with is that glasses don't feel comfortable on my face. I simply do not like wearing them.
Over the past few years my eyesight has gotten to a stage where I need to wear glasses fulltime. My friends keep telling me to get contact lenses, but having read up on the fact that it is more dangerous to wear contact lenses than it is to have LASIK surgery, I have shied away from investigating further and thus, I have done nothing.

My fear with any type of procedure on my eye starts firstly with the idea of a needle going into the eye. Apparently, that doesn't happen anymore and with Dr Lessner's practice, he has the latest in technology with each procedure streamed live on the internet. It's fascinating to watch and the response from every person coming out is the same, "Is that it? I should have done it sooner. I am not sure what I was worried about."
Dr Lessner is a personable guy. He is not your average Doctor and his brain is as much attuned to business and branding as it is to doing LASIK procedures. From age two, his parents said that when he grows up he would be a Doctor, and by aged nine, he was reading a medical book at his Uncle's house about eye's and right there and then he decided to become an Eye Doctor.
His reputation has led to him being considered the best Doctor in his field although when you mention this, he shies away from that tag. Instead, he focuses on what a LASIK eye procedure does for the lives of his patients.
"I just want people to live life to the fullest and protect their eyesight," says Dr Lessner from Millennium Laser Eye Centers in South Florida.
"If someone was in a wheel chair and they were offered crutches or a simple hip operation, they wouldn't think twice because they want to walk.
"Yet people are so afraid of what they don't need to be afraid of and instead opt for the more expensive option of glasses or what can possibly provide more harm in contract lenses.
"LASIK is a simple procedure and its life changing. You just have to see some of the videos of our patients coming out of the procedure to be able to appreciate it."
So whether its performing a LASIK procedure on actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, former NFL Coach Jimmy Johnson or basketballer Dwyane Wade, from Miami Heat, Dr Lessner has a passion for changing people's lives.
I am less afraid now and more comfortable than ever before to move forward with a LASIK procedure but like most people, I don't know what held me back for so long.
