How many of us spend time thinking about what our New Year’s resolutions are going to be and never let them see light of day?

I am an avid believer in planning and setting goals so New Year’s Resolutions are integral to my life both professionally and personally. In many cases, I actually follow them through because they are realistic, ambitious and achievable.

On New Year’s Eve I sat around with a group of friends of mine and pondered what our New Year’s resolutions should be.

I wrote down 12, everyone else wrote down 1.

Interesting!

Am I delusional? Should there be no New Year’s resolutions? Do I actually call them New Year’s resolutions when they are actually plans and goals that are not life changing, but in fact are things that are being actioned as I type?

Play more golf – well I am playing more golf.
Buy more real estate – well I am searching for more real estate.
Be a better person – well, I try… sometimes fail, but its certainly in my DNA.
Live in France – I am a dreamer – who wouldn’t want to live in the South of France for one year?
Be a better manager – isn’t that why I am avidly reading book after book on how to be a better manager? I need serious help in this area, but hey, doesn’t everyone? Is anyone out there really the perfect manager?
Achieve financial goals – I never set this bar too high to avoid disappointment…but once again – all achievable.

The power of positive thinking is a good thing in hindsight. It allows you to think that everything is achievable and there is nothing one cannot do. I wake up everyone morning believing. It’s like believing in God in some ways, but in this case it is believing in yourself.

In business, if ever I went to work thinking it’s another job, another day, I would be depressed. There has never been a day in my life that I haven’t wanted to jump out of bed at 6am, get dressed as fast as possible and head in to the office before anyone else starts work.

I do my best work before everyone arrives and then I spend the rest of the day with clients and staff solving problems, creating opportunities and coming up with creative and inspiring ideas that ignites passion in staff, clients and all relevant stakeholders.

I have learnt that I am not perfect (let me assure you that this is hard to realise when you are a Virgo) and that I need a helping hand as much as the  person next to me.

I have also learnt that no-one else is perfect so if they slip up, then that too is ok.

This year I want to be better. I want to inspire more people. I want to be happy.

I remember distinctively in my twenties having an entire year where I couldn’t stop pinching myself because I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be living this life. I want more than anything for 2010 to be just that.

Professionally, my goals are;

  1. Help more companies grow through marketing
  2. Inspire my team to be the best that they can be
  3. Create wealth opportunities for Marketing Managers in Australia and overseas by giving them opportunities to work with the Marketing Eye brand
  4. Innovate and create ways in which to market companies that is smarter and faster than our competitors
  5. Grow Marketing Eye in Australia and overseas
  6. Share my passion for marketing

Personally, my goals are;

  1. To be happy (really happy)
  2. To expand my horizons
  3. To play more golf
  4. To be a better person
  5. To help more people in need
  6. To save for a rainy day

These goals are not mind-blowingly unique. Many of us have the same goals but I intend to make sure that I live and breathe these goals by setting up reminders on the fridge, on my desk, in the shower, in the car… you name it, these messages will be plastered everywhere.

I remember years ago John McGrath from McGrath Real Estate said that he put a list of his goals in his shower and looked at it every day. He is motivated, highly successful and a very smart man. Following his lead is not a crazy idea.
