How many of you receive telemarketing calls on your mobile and feel like someone’ s intruded on your personal space?

What about when a machine from Vodafone rings you up and starts giving you a recorded message about the fact you should move from your current service provider to them?

Or, when a scripted telemarketer rings up and gives you the spiel (usually from an Indian call centre with an American accent)?

Better still, I have had my mobile phone number for 15 years and I still get telemarketing calls for someone who owned the number 17 years ago! Go figure!

I personally am NOT a fan of any of the above but I do see a place for telemarketing in many small businesses marketing strategies, and today reinforced this.

Marketing Eye has a client that is a technology company that is offering businesses in a particular vertical market, something that they truly need to have. So after coaching the marketing executives that were to do the telemarketing on the company, I asked them to throw away the script and role play with me.

They were nervous – some faces turned beetroot red – but after a few goes they settled into it and the results speak for themselves.

In half an hour – 3 meetings for the client! Not bad, huh!

I’m impressed but a little tip for any buddying telemarketer – THROW AWAY THE SCRIPT!
