It truly is. In just a few seconds a perfect stranger will evaluate how you look, who you are, and whether they enjoy your company or not.
Knowing how important a first impression is, especially as a business owner, you can imagine my dismay when two new team members found me running around the office playing with my dog. It was early in the morning and time had gotten away from me. I had just finished writing a blog, and after staring at my screen for that long, I decided my dog needed some attention.
While of course, I was just being human, I found myself to be utterly embarrassed. I was hoping to come off a bit more professional to my new employees. They informed me that I displayed a lot of energy and they really appreciated that about me.
One expressed how she had been watching me type prior to playing with my dog. She explained that her idea of a "big boss" was someone who showed up later than the rest of the team. She was impressed that I was at work early and already working hard.
I got lucky this time, but I have to keep in mind that may not always be the case. What one person sees as positive, fun and exciting another might see as unprofessional. If you have ever done the exercise where you go around the table and ask every person their first impression of someone, you will find everyone's answers to be different.
Later that day, I had to run off to a quick meeting. The meeting was super important and it was with one of my earlier mentors. He is incredibly intelligent, and his input into what I am building with Robotic Marketer is priceless.
After the meeting, I had a crazy rush of energy. I was so excited about my meeting and for what the future holds. Once again, this positive energy revealed a more active, excitable version of myself. The new members of the team loved the positive energy around the office. They realized that they have a high energy leader who they can relate to. That day, I took the time to speak with each team member individually and I rolled up my sleeves to teach them new things.
They didn't realize how important blogs, and in particular marketing blogs, are to the industry, nor the benefits of engagement on social media. They loved the culture of the company and said to me afterwards that they felt this is a business where they will be successful. And it is; a lively culture inevitably leads to high productivity.
This time, my first impression worked in my favor. Next time, however, I may use a different approach in the future. The critical lesson I learned today is that a positive work culture and an energetic environment is something everyone wants.
Today, my new employees left their new careers feeling pumped! Now that is a good day.
